Projektinformationen zur Katalogisierung einiger illuminierter hebräischer Handschriften der
Bayerischen
Staatsbibliothek München durch das
Center for Jewish Art, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Cataloguing Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
A Research Project of the Center for Jewish Art, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
In January 2008 the Illuminated manuscripts section of the Center for Jewish Art at
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem began a project
supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. The project entails the documentation and
research of 50 Hebrew illuminated manuscripts housed in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek
in Munich, which were selected due to the importance of their illuminations.
The manuscripts include a wide range of texts, amongst which are Bibles, prayer books
and halakhic texts, as well as medical, philosophical and kabalistic treatises,
produced from the 13th to the 18th centuries in different regions of the Jewish Diaspora.
The detailed examination and research of the manuscripts will afford a deeper insight
into the style, iconography and decorative traditions, as well as the working methods,
of Jewish scribes and Christian artists, while anchoring them in the appropriate
historical and cultural context. Moreover, the investigation of their provenance,
especially from great private collections like those of the Hebraists
A. Widmanstetter and J. J. Fugger, will contribute important material
for the history of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
